What is ExactFlat?

ExactFlat is software for digital pattern making.  ExactFlat is a plug-in for SolidWorks 3D, and a plug-in for Rhinoceros 3D.

Why is ExactFlat faster?

ExactFlat intelligently automates time consuming pattern making processes to make a faster workflow. Users report that ExactFlat is up to 16x faster than traditional manual pattern making.

The heart of ExactFlat, is the ability to translate 3D geometry into 2D sewing patterns. This capability has been refined over 15 years and is not the most accurate in the industry. ExactFlat is faster because it is accurate the first time. If you can model your part in 3D, ExactFlat can flatten it.

Why is 3D to 2D flattening difficult and complex?

 There are several reasons.  For example: 

Material complexity

  •  Material warp, weft, weave; and

  •  Stretch (Young’s modulus, Poisson ratio).

3D model complexity

  • Material strain and sag based on geometry;

  • Material can be single or multiply; 

  • Uni or multi-directional in orientation; 

  • With uniform or variable fabric tow spacing.

Surface complexity, adds even more difficulty

  • Class A surfaces, or G3 surfaces;

  • Surfaces with a non-zero Gaussian constraint, commonly referred to as non-developable or double curvature; or

  • Surfaces with edges that mate to adjacent edges. 

Pattern making complexity 

  • If darts or relief cuts are needed, they may need to be staggered by ply; 

  • When pieces are placed in a tool, tow spacing may change.

 Why is ExactFlat more accurate than manual pattern making?

ExactFlat specializes in 3D to 2D flattening of double curved surfaces.  ExactFlat uses the warp, weft, weave, surface shape, material stretch, and 7 different Finite Element algorithms including “de-wrinkle”, and “smooth” to create accurate patterns.

For what industries/products is ExactFlat suitable:

ExactFlat is for 3D to 2D digital pattern making.  ExactFlat is useful for industries that make products incorporating fabric, technical textiles, carbon fibre composite cloth into their design.  ExactFlat is also useful for 3D to 2D flattening of rigid and semi-rigid materials such as metals, or wood.  Example industries include:
